This compilation consists simply of the texts of some very famous sermons from the last three hundred or so years. It features Jonathan Edwards’ ‘Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God’, George Whitefield’s ‘Repentance’ and Billy Graham’s ‘Responsibilities of the Christian Home’, amongst others.
It felt like a genuine privilege to read the actual words of some sermons that shaped entire generations, particularly the older ones from the eighteenth century. You could almost imagine Edwards or Wesley delivering them. And some of them - Whitefield and Spurgeon in particular - were really powerful. They still leap off the page today.
As with any range of preachers, there are some that hit you in the heart and some that just don’t really connect. A few of the sermons were harder to follow, and a little more conceptual. But that’s normal with a spectrum of different voices.
Any aspiring preacher or pastor would do well to read it, simply to gain a bit of perspective about those who went before us. It really is humbling.
Yes, without reservation!
Old language and phraseology is harder to read, but ploughing through it is worth it - there are some absolute gems.
